Weekend Top 5

Ever since my little run in with the alcohol fairy, I have been fairly complain-y for the past week. So to move out of that rut I am going to list my top five random favourites as I go into this lovely September weekend.

1. Vancouver – Man I really love this city. I live in a suburb called Burnaby which is about twenty minutes away from the downtown core and I work in another suburb called New Westminster. As of the beginning of October, I will begin working for my same company but in their downtown Vancouver office. I will have a lovely view of the mountains and will be steps away from Pho, Tim Hortons, sushi and shopping. I will also be directly across the street from the gym I will be working out at. I literally have only to cross the street in front of my office to reach my gym which is a good thing, because if I have to put any effort in getting to the gym, likelihood is that I won’t go. Bit of a situational oxymoron I know, but I am a girl full of contradictions.
2. Dim Sum – this Sunday the hubby and I will be joining a girlfriend of mine whose birthday is around mine for our annual Dim Sum Sunday Birthday Brunch. We do this every year, and no matter where we go during the rest of the year, this outing is always conducted at the Pink Pearl Restaurant. They have the most mouthwatering dim sum and a bunch of stuff you can’t get at almost any other dim sum restaurant. I will be happily eating spicy steamed chicken feet, deep fried tofu, marinated squid and all the little dumplings I can handle before they have to roll me out of the restaurant.
3. Ginger Ale – until my little run in with the bottle last weekend, I hadn’t touched ginger ale in about a half dozen years. Don’t know why - just didn’t. I forgot how nice and subtle it is, how refreshing it is no matter whether it is cold or room temperature, and how calming it is on my stomach. I have since had a nice cold glass of ginger ale every day this week and will probably make it a bit of a habit until I get sick of it.
4. My sister-in-law – I have known my sister-in-law for about ten years, since she was a teenager, getting into trouble, fighting with boyfriends and frenimies and drinking more that I though humanly possible. She is my husband’s baby sister and we have been bridesmaids at each other’s weddings, partied together, done some illegal stuff together and flashed drivers in Surrey together (bachelorette scavenger hunt – another story for another day). She is the mother of a fabulous 19 month old little girl and recently started talking with her husband about starting to try for a second. She knows that my husband and I started trying a few months ago for our first and mentioned to me on the weekend that they were going to start trying and wouldn’t it be great for us to be pregnant and on mat leave together. Then she phoned me a couple days later. She wanted to make sure that I was okay with the situation, because she didn’t want me to feel like she was stealing my thunder. That has to be the sweetest thing I have ever heard of. I think being the youngest of three, she is very perceptive when in comes to sibling rivalry, whereas I, being an only child I hadn’t even thought of that. I am so proud of the woman she has become and that I have had a chance to be a part of that.
5. Tim Horton’s Breakfast Sandwiches – If I had to invent the best breakfast sandwich ever, this is what I would have come up with. Bacon or sausage, egg (not too big or greasy), melty cheese and a toasted BISCUIT. Not English muffin, not bun, a BISCUIT. I almost wept it was so good. The next time I am asked what I would bring with me to a desert island – other than the husband – I will say a supply of the breakfast sandwiches and extra large coffee – double, double of course.

Hurtin Like a Mother Lover

There are things that we all do every once and a while that reminds us why we don’t generally do these things all the time. For me they all seem to revolve around food or drink. I cannot eat KFC more than once a year and I always seem to forget why it is that I don’t eat Red Robin’s nachos. So it is in this vain, that I went out partying on Saturday to celebrate my 32nd birthday. After that night and the ensuing past day and a half, I may never drink again. EVER.

Now I like everyone else, enjoy drinking every now and then. I have developed a taste for beer in the past year, which is nice, cuz it is usually cheaper and gives me a whole different alcohol group to learn more about. However, I for some reason decided that since Red Bull and vodka was so darned yummy, that I should attempt to drink my body weight in it. Needless to say, the evening ended not quite as nicely as it had started. For the first time ever in my life, there are periods of my evening that I will never remember. My husband says I have nothing to worry about, that I behaved very well (except for the vomiting, but luckily that was in the privacy of my own home) and will have nothing to apologize for when I next see my friends. What disturbs me though is that I had a phone conversation, paid for a cab and undressed, and have no memory of doing any of this.

And then it just got better. I was luckily saved from any headache (God only knows how) but managed to have the worst feeling tummy I have ever had. Greasy breakfast did nothing to relieve it and I spent the rest of the day under my blankie, alternating between black coffee, water and ginger aleWhoopeepee! Happy Birthday to me!

This morning I woke up and was very thankful that my tummy was feeling much better (although it is still not 100%) but my muscles have been aching like stupid since I got up and there is nothing that will relieve the pain.

Needless to say, when someone offered to take me out for a beer tonight to celebrate my birthday (actual date of my birth being today!) I almost gagged.

So what have I learned this year as I get older and wiser. I will now always have a glass of water in between every alcoholic drink I consume. I will not drink everything put in front of me. And my husband is a star, cuz he took care of me so well and managed to relate everything I did to me afterwards so I didn't have to worry.

Do you have any fabulously funny bar stories to tell?
